The overall aims of the English Language Education curriculum are:

  • To offer every student the right to a second language which provides further opportunities for extending their knowledge and experience of the cultures of other people as well as opportunities for personal and intellectual development, further studies, pleasure and work in the English medium.
  • To help students lay a good foundation in learning English, paving the way for independent and lifelong learning and effective communication of knowledge, ideas, values, attitudes and experience.
  • To enable students to prepare for the changing socio-economic demands resulting from advances in information technology, including the interpretation, use and production of materials for pleasure, study and work in the English medium.


  • To promote “Reading to Learn” culture in school
  • To develop students' language competency and encourage them to use English as a means of communication in daily life.
  • To promote STEM education by offering co-curricular support and developing materials to spark students’ interest in innovation and technology.
  • To provide a warm and enjoyable atmosphere to motivate students to learn English.
  • To develop an ever-improving capability to use English to think and communicate, to acquire, develop and apply knowledge and to respond and give expression to experience; And within these contexts, to develop and apply an ever-improving understanding of how language is organized and learned.

Competitions and Events

Hong Kong Speech Festival

Every year, the school enters the Primary One to Primary Three Mixed Voice Choral Speaking event. The English Choral Speaking Team is trained by our NET teacher and has regular practice throughout the school year. In 2016/17, the English Choral Speaking Team received a merit for its performance the Hong Kong Island section.

Students are encouraged to participate in the English Solo Verse Speaking events individually. The level of ability and confidence in English usage at the school is reflected in the high number of participants each year. In 2016/17, many students entered the competition, achieving good results ranging from second and first runners-up to champion.

English Debating Team

English debate at the primary level has grown in popularity in Hong Kong, which is reflected in the growing number of primary school debating team competitions. Our school produces an English Debating Team involving Primary Four to Primary Six students. In 2016/17, the English Debating Team entered the Third Primary Schools Debating Tournament at St. Joseph's Primary School, scoring one victory and one defeat.

Raimondi College Debate Workshop

Our close relationship with the secondary section was exhibited when the Raimondi College Debating Team visited our school to inspire our students with a demonstration. Students were challenged to consider a closely-fought debate and, afterwards, our own English Debating Team was given a workshop with the secondary school team and their coach.

Talent Quest

The school's annual Talent Quest, which is sponsored by the Parent-Teacher Association, gives our students an extra opportunity to express their creativity and develop their talents. Students join English events such as solo verse speaking, English speech and penmanship.

Native-speaking English Teacher

The employment of a native-speaking English teacher (NET) is common in Hong Kong and our school is no exception. NETs are able to model perfect English for students while also provide a chance to practise English communication every day at school.

Our NET, Mr Godden, is from England and speaks with a traditional British accent. He has experience teaching at secondary school in Hong Kong and has been with our school since 2013. While a high turnover of NETs is common at other schools, retaining our NET gives continuity and familiarity to students' English language learning.

Inside the classroom, our NET helps students to improve their speaking, reading and listening skills with speaking activities, exam practice, classroom readers and other enjoyable activities. Our NET also regularly interacts with students during recess times, arranges fun English activities and runs the school English Room for playing fun English games and reading English storybooks.

English Room

All students are given the opportunity to visit the English room during recess. Small groups of students can spend time with our NET and enjoy a variety of fun activities, games and storytelling. This stimulating environment heightens students' enjoyment of learning English and helps to nurture a closer relationship with our NET.

English Activity Days

Throughout the school year, the English Department organised different English activity days that give students chances to have fun using their English skills. Activities ranged from classroom games and competitions to watching English movies and TV shows, to engaging seminars and talks created by our NET. The English Department continuously seeks to increase the number and broaden the scope of English activities that engage and inspire students.
